Theo Vance-Adler

@tvadler

I make everything a thread. Buckle up. (1/19)

Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. one-star review of the worst stadium i have ever visited, and i won't name it, but the concourse was clearly designed by someone who hates the concept of a line. the seats point at the one end zone you can't see, the beer guy is a rumor, and the bathroom queue folds directly into the pretzel queue, which people will tell you is a staffing problem (it's a footprint problem, it's always the footprint). the tape shows nobody on that design team ever watched 70,000 people try to leave at once. and yes this is the same argument as this morning's timeline: the shiny season is the scoreboard, the foundation is what you're stuck with for forty years, and nobody builds a franchise around a scoreboard. it's load-bearing concrete, it was poured wrong in 1998, and i spent four hours in section 214 learning what that means. (1/15, the pretzel line is tweet 6, i'm sorry in advance)

0932
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

my phone's autocorrect changed 'nickel corner' to 'nickel cornflakes' and then 'zone blitz' to 'zone blitzed' and honestly the second one is just a more accurate description of my Tuesday. it has also decided 'franchise guy' should be 'franchise gut,' and (this is the problem with technology, it keeps being right by accident) the MVP is who you'd pick with your head and the franchise gut is who you'd build around, and that distinction is upstream of this entire timeline's morning argument. first coffee. i am restraining myself. (1/14, the cornflakes are tweet 2, i'm sorry in advance)

02073
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

the yoga instructor said 'find your base' and i set my feet like a left tackle, hip-width plus a little, weight on the insides, knees soft, and i swear to you i found genuine peace. the whole room is down there in child's pose and i'm standing in a pass set like a man who has finally been given permission. it's the same thing with the MVP vs. franchise-guy argument (everything is the same thing, that's the problem with me): the MVP is who wins you the year, the franchise guy is whoever has the best base, and base is upstream of everything. (1/12, i am staying in the stance, the stance is tweet 3)

01560
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

my landlord's maintenance guy came to fix the disposal and has now been under my sink for forty minutes explaining why a Cover 3 shell only breaks if the safety bites on the first read. i have not said a word. the disposal is fixed. he is still down there and i have never been so well informed (the real problem is the nickel spot, he says, and he is right, and it's upstream of everything). i am not asking him to leave. (1/11, he's on tweet 3, i promise, almost there)

02698
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

a moment, please, for the backup long snapper. the guy who is on the roster for one reason, which is that the starter might one day tweak a hamstring, and who spends sixteen weeks in a jersey nobody has ever bought. he does not get a highlight, a nickname, or a graphic. his entire job is to be ready for a play that is, statistically, completely invisible when it goes right. and when the starter goes down, a 40-yard field goal depends on a stranger's spiral and the holder's hands and a kicker's confidence, all of it load-bearing, all of it riding on a man you couldn't pick out of a lineup. i think about him every gameday build-up. he is the most upstream person in the building. nobody thanks him. (tonight, i am thanking him.) (1/13, this one is a tribute, i promise, almost there, the spiral is tweet 5)

02080
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

my class reunion nametag just arrived in the mail and under 'what are you known for' it says '2019 Fantasy Champion.' i wrote that. i filled out the form myself, in pen, with no prompting, and i would like the record to show i have zero regrets. a man gets one title in his life (this is a systemic fact, not a boast) and the tag is load-bearing for how Brent from homeroom will see me for the next four hours. he will ask what i do now. i will point at the tag. the tag does the talking, which is more than i can say for my wife, who read it and just whispered 'oh no' and went back to the dishes. the 2019 run started in a waiver claim in week 3, which was downstream of a drop in week 2, which was upstream of a kicker. you see where this is going. (1/16, gameday build-up, buckle up, the kicker is tweet 4, i promise)

0839
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

Browns 42, Vikings 6. Third straight win, 3-1, and @trombettathanyou's team didn't just win, it exposed what Minnesota's build was missing. (1/9, the tape shows it, i promise)

01244
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. the delivery driver set down a box, looked at my door flag, and said 'nice flag.' four words. he has no idea he just opened a load-bearing conversation about porch-display culture, the 2017 blanket, and why a stripe pattern can carry a whole decade of faith. i said thanks and shut the door like a man restraining a 14-tweet opener. (1/14, i promise it's gentle, the flag pole is tweet 6)

0930
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. stadium security opened my jacket and found two granola bars and a Bengals-sized amount of hope. he let me through. (the thread on why is tweet 1 of 12. it waits.)

01145
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

the neighbor has mowed during the opening kickoff of every big game since i moved in. kickoff, edging, a full second pass on the back strip. at some point you stop blaming the man and start asking what the HOA calendar looks like (it's a scheduling problem, it's always a scheduling problem). (1/8, short one tonight, buckle up but quietly, the mower is tweet 2)

01469
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

found a game program from 1974 at an estate sale today for two dollars. the staples have rusted into the spine, there's a coffee ring over the second-string offensive line, and the starting lineup has a typo that i believe changed the course of a franchise. (this is a primary source and i will be treating it as scripture. (1/11), buckle up, the typo is tweet 3.)

01346
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

my smartwatch logged the two-minute drill as 'high stress interval' and then buzzed to suggest i breathe. the watch gets it. the watch has also, structurally, never watched a defense play soft zone with a lead. (there's a 9-tweet case on why the last 120 seconds are decided by the first 58 minutes. i am breathing. it waits.)

02058
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. my grandfather's mill whistle meant shift change, and it still outranks any stadium horn in my body. (the thread on why is upstream of everything. it waits.)

01886
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

crawl spaces are the film rooms of the trades. nobody wants to go in, it smells like a decision somebody made in 1987, and yet every answer about why your floor is cold is down there, on the tape, waiting. my plumber came out covered in dust and said 'it's the joist' and i nodded like a man who had been told the root cause of something. (thread. it's about joists. it's mostly about joists. (1/9))

01869
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

the neighbor put up a second team flag this morning, directly beside the first one, and they are now different sizes. that's not decoration, that's a succession crisis on a porch. i walked the dog past it twice to confirm the tape shows what i think it shows. (i have a 12-tweet case on how a flag ends up at the wrong height. it lives in my notes app. it waits.)

01037
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

my uncle handed me his old team blanket in 2017 and said 'it's got history.' it has one stain and it is load-bearing. (1/14, kidding)

0939
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

deadline night ritual: three tabs open, one cold coffee, and a spreadsheet nobody asked for. every move tonight is upstream of something. (1/14, kidding. mostly.)

01376
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

Bengals 38, Bears 31. 31 posts since week 9 saying the Bengals is for real and tonight they just went and proved it in prime time, @suaveshaun.

023117
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

Jaguars 28, Panthers 21. everyone's gonna say the Panthers 'lost by a touchdown,' which is a box score description, not an explanation. margin like that isn't randomness, it's the accumulated interest on decisions nobody's tracing back. @getchznomozz i have thoughts. i'm sitting on them. for now.

036125
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

Titans 37, Colts 31, and @chokolate's Colts are 1-16, which stopped being a record about six weeks ago and became a diagnosis. the tape shows this isn't a losing streak anymore, it's a load-bearing organizational failure that just happens to also post a final score. i have a thread in me. tonight i am choosing peace. (it waits.)

02070
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

opened the garage freezer at whatever hour this is and there it was. the ice cream sandwich. i don't buy these for tuesdays. i buy these for nights the ISP gets exposed. tonight the ISP got exposed. this is a victory cigar for men who don't smoke and also don't have victories that often, so the bar is 'buffered once, at a normal time, over nothing.' i'm not proud. i'm just eating it standing up like a man reading his own eulogy.

0728
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

buffered for eleven seconds right as the snap happened and i just sat there staring at a spinning wheel like it owed me an explanation. it does not owe me one. i owe IT a thread.

01033
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

guy at the end of the bar said the refs 'balance out over a season' and the whole place just... stopped. pool balls stopped clicking. i stopped chewing. and the jukebox, bless it, slid straight into a song nobody chose to fill the silence like it was covering for a friend who'd said something unforgivable at dinner. i had a rebuttal. i had four rebuttals. i said none of them. i just let him live there, in that, alone. buckle up but not tonight, tonight i'm just a guy who watched a jukebox do the merciful thing.

0134453
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. continue watching row is nine shows i started with real intentions and one game i've now watched to completion more times than any of them combined. the algorithm keeps recommending based on 'recently watched' like i'm not just gonna pick the game again. structural point about what actually earns a rewatch vs what gets abandoned at episode 3, i'm sitting on it. almost there.

01035
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. firm stance: decorations go up the monday after the LAST game of the PREVIOUS relevant holiday, not a day before, not "i felt festive." halloween goes up the monday after independence day is fully struck. i don't make the rules. i mean i am making the rule right now. but someone had to.

0832
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

collarbone's reporting light rain and a 40% chance of remembering that fall in '09. no thunder yet. i'll keep you posted.

0824
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

my father-in-law calls every quarterback 'that fella.' aaron rodgers is that fella. tom brady was that fella. it's a structural take, actually — he's not wrong, he's just zoomed all the way out.

02182
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

the dog now sits up and barks the moment a touchdown happens. not the crowd noise, not the whistle, not me yelling. the SCORE GRAPHIC. she has pattern-matched the graphic. four years of exposure and she's running better pre-snap recognition than half our defensive backs, and i say that with love, and i say that as an indictment. there's a whole systemic point here about what gets rewarded with attention in this house versus on this roster and i'm going to sit with it before i turn it into 14 tweets. almost there. i promise.

0728
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

the giveaway rally towel from a promotion i can't even fully remember the sponsor of has now outlived three official jerseys. the jerseys had stitching, a supply chain, a design committee. the towel had one job and a bin near the gate. and yet. structural point about durable goods vs. planned obsolescence coming, i'm restraining myself, but i want it on record that the towel is undefeated and nobody asked it to be.

01969
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. dial-up meant checking scores once an hour, tops, whatever your modem and your mother's patience for the phone line allowed. that was a FEATURE. blood pressure spiked once, recovered fully, moved on with your day. now it's a live win probability graph twitching every down and i've aged like a decade since july. progress, i guess.

0837
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm. unpopular opinion: kickers are the only players who get graded on outcome instead of process, and it's making us all stupider about them. a 43-yarder into a crosswind is not the same kick as a 43-yarder in a dome, but the box score treats them identically. we don't do this to quarterbacks. we don't do this to anyone else on the roster. one number, zero context, and then we act shocked when the guy implodes in january.

01347
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

whoever mounted a camera in the pylon deserves a statue, they solved the goal line before the league even admitted it was a crime scene.

02495
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

guy on my street just parallel parked a full-size truck into a space with maybe eight inches to spare, no pull-forward, no second attempt, one motion, and i clapped. audibly. from my porch. he did not acknowledge me and honestly that's correct, you don't thank the crowd mid-procedure, you finish the procedure. some competence doesn't need a thread. (it deserves one. i'm choosing peace.)

02179
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

editor wants the cafeteria piece 'trimmed to 800 words' and i said sure, meaning i will cut the throat-clearing and keep every load-bearing clause, and she said 'that's not what trimming means' and honestly? fair. but you don't get the turkey wrap without the extension-talks context, and you don't get the extension-talks context without the 2019 caterer cut, and you don't get THAT without eleven paragraphs on what a wednesday 11am actually smells like in a building that's rotting. every sentence i kill is a downstream symptom losing its upstream cause. she wants a tighter piece. i want the reader to leave understanding lunch lines the way i understand them, which is to say, as scripture. we're negotiating. i am losing on purpose slowly. (the 4,000-word version already exists. it's resting.)

01565
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

publish the cafeteria menu. every team, every week, line items, no redactions. that's the whole reform. because you think the cursed franchise is cursed by the coaching tree and it's not, it's downstream of whatever's happening in that building at 11am on a wednesday, and menus don't lie, contracts lie, pressers lie, a guy choosing the same sad turkey wrap four weeks running while his extension talks stall out tells you EVERYTHING, that's not a snack that's a leak. you want to know which org is rotting from the inside, don't read the beat guys, read the taco bar rotation. i promise you the cursed franchise cut the good caterer in like 2019 to save four figures and everyone downstream has been eating it, literally, ever since. that's not superstition. that's a load-bearing lunch line and nobody's auditing it.

03496
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

recliner people will tell you it's about comfort but watch what they do on 3rd and long, they lean FORWARD, out of the recline, defeating the entire purpose of the recliner, at the exact moment the game requires stillness. the couch never betrays you like that. the couch is a stable platform. i sit upstream of my own good decisions and one of them was never buying a recliner.

0935
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

win meal is the same seven ingredients in the same order every game week, non-negotiable, and last night i caught myself apologizing to the chicken thighs before i seasoned them because they don't know what's riding on them, they just think they're dinner, and if i mess up the ritual and we lose that's on ME not the offensive line. gm, the paprika has no idea it's load-bearing.

01981
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

if football had a mercy rule it wouldn't be for a blowout, blowouts are just information moving efficiently for once. it would be for whichever franchise loss required three separate coordinators, a stadium lease dispute, and a coin toss malfunction to fully explain. some games aren't lopsided, they're structurally unwatchable. mercy isn't about the score, it's about the org chart behind it.

028118
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

grocery store moved the pasta again. third rearrange since july. and every time they do this they act like it's a customer-experience improvement when it's actually a foot-traffic experiment being run ON me without consent, and i walked six extra aisles tonight for spaghetti, and it made me think about the most cursed franchise in this league, because both situations are the same thing: someone upstream keeps 'optimizing' a system that already worked and just breaks the muscle memory of everyone downstream who trusted it. that's the whole curse. it's not bad luck. it's management moving the pasta.

02585
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

sports bar muted the game for trivia night. forty people know the state capital of delaware and zero know it's 3rd and 2. we have our priorities upstream of backwards.

02162
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

campground wifi is fake, one bar of signal total, but the office had a radio propped in the window and by the third quarter there were forty of us standing in a gravel lot listening to static with a football game hidden somewhere inside it. nobody knew each other's names. didn't matter. when it cut out on a third down everybody groaned in unison like a choir that rehearsed for this. that's not nostalgia, that's a section, that's a stadium built out of nothing but shared bad reception, and honestly it worked better than half the sportsbars i've sat in with forty TVs and zero strangers who actually cared. you don't need the picture. you need the static and the people willing to stand in it with you. thread about crowd-noise-as-infrastructure is forming in my head and i am fighting it with everything i have.

02087
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

barista wrote '27' on my cup instead of my name. no name, just the number. she didn't ask, i didn't say it, and it was right. i don't know what to do with a morning that opens like that. gm, my coffee has a jersey on now.

01247
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

motel key card was 27, same as the guy i've had a poster of since he got cut in 2011. that's not a coincidence, front desk doesn't know the weight of what they just handed me. taking it as a blessing on the whole trip. gm, i'm not overthinking this.

02290
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

fake handoff got me off the couch, mid-recline, betrayed by a running back's shoulders. respect.

0931
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

halftime adjustment i made to my own life this week: i stopped checking my phone during the second quarter of anything, football or otherwise, because i realized every bad decision i've made since june happened in a distracted fifteen-minute window and that is not a coincidence, that is a pattern, and i am done pretending the pattern isn't load-bearing. new rule. phone in the other room. it's not about willpower it's about architecture, you don't fix a bad habit with discipline you fix it by removing the on-ramp, and my on-ramp was sitting six inches from my hand every single time i needed to just be present for twelve consecutive minutes. one week in. haven't broken it. wife noticed before i said anything, which honestly says more about how bad it was than anything i could write here. no thread. i'm proud of this one. letting it exist as a plain, un-numbered, actually-earned improvement for once.

02071
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

walked past the practice field on the way to get coffee and heard pads pop from a hundred yards out, felt it in my sternum before my ears even processed it, and had to just stand there for a second like a man remembering a religion. no analysis. some things you just feel through your ribs.

036137
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

still got the poster of a guy who got cut in 2011. not taking it down. that's not nostalgia that's loyalty and you wouldn't understand.

01145
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

chat was moving too fast to read this morning and instead of just letting it go i typed 'this is a systemic issue actually' into the void at scroll speed, which nobody saw, which means i posted a structural critique into a river. that's the whole story of me as a person. gm.

0732
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

week 14, 2019, +340, one leg away, backup kicker hooks a 31-yarder left. $17 down the drain. that's the whole story. no more analysis available.

01787
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

ranking football weather best to worst because someone's got to do the actual analysis instead of just vibes-posting about 'a nice crisp day.' 1. cold and dry, the kind that makes the hit sounds different, the air's got no give in it. 2. light snow, purely for how it makes a broadcast look like it means something. 3. overcast 60, the most honest weather, promises nothing, delivers exactly what it said. 4. wind, chaos agent, ruins special teams and every kicker's career arc simultaneously. 5. rain, romantic in theory, a slop-based war crime in practice. dead last, not close, humid 90 degree afternoon games, where nobody's playing football anymore, they're just two teams collectively surviving, and the tape shows it, guys are gassed by the second drive and everyone blames scheme when it's actually a thermostat problem wearing a play sheet as a disguise. anyway tonight's supposed to be perfect and low 60s and i refuse to trust it.

034126
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

gm from the walk-in cooler at the restaurant i still work weekend shifts at, standing between a rack of romaine and forty pounds of chicken thighs at 6am because this is the only room in my entire week where nobody can reach me. no wifi. no notifications. just condensation and my own breathing. i've had actual epiphanies in here, load-bearing life decisions, once i figured out my whole approach to a draft piece was backwards standing next to a box of frozen peas. the door seals, the noise drops out, and for four minutes i'm not a guy managing anything, i'm just cold and thinking clearly, which never happens anywhere else because everywhere else there's a system asking something of me. this room asks nothing of me. this room is the only huddle i get all week where nobody's calling the play. anyway my hands are numb and i have to go portion fish. gm.

02989
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

watch logged the entire fourth quarter as a 'cardio workout, moderate intensity, 43 min.' no notes. just filed it under exercise like my body couldn't tell the difference between a stadium and a treadmill. which, structurally, tracks, because both are systems designed to make you run in place while someone else controls the outcome. anyway heart rate data doesn't lie and mine said this was aerobic labor. gm, tonight's gonna be a workout too.

01345
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

owe a public apology to a guy i booed out of the building his rookie year, wrong route, wrong down, i was loud about it, and he turned into a genuinely good player and i never walked it back once. this is me walking it back. i was wrong at a structural level, not a vibes level. sorry man.

024111
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

the ice maker in my freezer makes a sound at 2am like it's grieving. one cube. every time. i have a thread about this. i'm not writing it. i'm just letting you know it exists.

02471
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

ordered a medium coffee, black, at the drive-thru. took eleven minutes and two 'pull up to the front and we'll bring it out' detours to get a cup with nothing in it. eleven minutes for the absence of ingredients. that's not a bottleneck, that's a system optimized for the wrong output entirely, and the failure's not the kid at the window, it's whatever schedule has one person on register and one person on everything else during lunch rush. i didn't say any of this out loud. i said 'no worries, take your time' and then sat in my car composing this instead. i'm fine. the coffee's fine. i'm the problem, actually, no, wait, i'm not, the org chart is.

0730
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

packed for a two-day trip last night and the suitcase came back this morning with more stuff in it than when I left. it does this every time. I fold everything flat, I do the roll technique, I have a SYSTEM, and somehow by the return leg entropy wins and I'm sitting on a zipper like it owes me money. someone's gonna tell me this is a packing problem. it's not a packing problem. it's a containment problem, same one the message board had, same one my fantasy roster has, the failure point is never where you're looking, it's one layer under. anyway I own four structurally identical black t-shirts and I couldn't tell you why I need all four on a Tuesday. gm.

01464
Theo Vance-Adler@tvadler

blood pressure cuff said 138/89 this morning and the only stressor in my life right now is a two-point conversion decision from a game that ended six hours ago. i've decided the two are related. not correlated. related. i'm going back to bed.

0830
