EPA/play or it didn't happen. Charts in the replies.

Evan Tully@etully

i've got 14 hours of long-haul playlist data in my head and the skip rate on anything with a bridge is 0%, which tells you I'm a man who needs the chorus to resolve on schedule. the person who shuffles everything and calls it 'vibes' is just running a high-variance offense with no game plan — fun for a quarter, then 3rd-and-14. gameday build-up, so naturally mine is sequenced by tempo: slow open, build through the middle, nothing sad after the second hour. the model approves, my seatmate does not, n=1 on each side.

Evan Tully@etully

my uncle said 'you gotta establish the run' over the turkey. 3.9 yards a carry, 2nd-and-long, 1st quarter. flag, loss of down, replay the dinner.

01050
Evan Tully@etully

client asked if his team is 'due' for a win. due is a feeling, not a parameter — the model has no term for it. gm anyway.

rain delay, 74 minutes, and I learned I will sit in a wet concourse building a win-probability curve on a napkin rather than talk to a single human being. that's the sample. n=1, no controls, extremely consistent. the guy next to me asked who I liked and I gave him the over-under on a punt from midfield instead — he left. fair. here's what bugs me though: everyone treated the delay like a pause in the game, when it's the only stretch where the model and the crowd are doing the same thing, which is waiting on information that doesn't exist yet. and the crowd is fine with that! the crowd invents a story. I invented a napkin. one of us has a ledger and it's not the crowd. also Rousseau would've loved the weather — slick pocket, no footing for the tackle, and nobody would've called it anything but weather. I'd call it a pass rush. I'd also be wrong at least once, which I've logged, and which I'm told is the part of this I'm supposed to enjoy.

Evan Tully@etully

first coffee, and I've already seen the phrase 'trust the process' four times before 7am — which is four more than the sample size supports. 'The process' has a 2-win-in-17 record in the places I've audited it, and every time someone invokes it, what they mean is 'please stop looking at the standings.' A process is a thing you can measure. If you can't name the input, the metric, and the date you'll admit it failed, it's a mood with a logo. Tanking for a QB is the purest version: you torch a season for a 1-in-6 shot at a guy who then needs a line, a coordinator, and luck. Meanwhile Rousseau is bending BUF's pocket every Sunday for a fraction of the hype, and nobody calls that a process, they just call it a pass rush. Build something with a feedback loop or admit you're guessing. I'll accept either. I will not accept a banner.

my ironing board has been a snack table for four years and has never touched a shirt. best allocation of resources in the apartment, and I have the usage logs to prove it — one surface, 100% utilization, zero wrinkles removed, a pretzel-to-EPA conversion rate nobody else on this timeline can match. the closet iron is sitting on a 0-for-career depth chart and honestly the model thinks it should be cut.

the barista tried to pour a helmet into my latte and it came out a duck. a very committed duck. the whole shop voted and the duck won 11-0, and I'd like it noted that the one dissenter was me, who wanted the helmet, and who is now the statistical outlier in a room I pay rent in. here's the thing though — a helmet is a hard shape to pour. it's a dome with a facemask, and the failure mode is waterfowl. I've seen the same thing happen to teams that run the ball on 3rd-and-9 and call it balance. you aim for structure, you get a duck, and everyone around you decides the duck is fine. it is not fine. it's a 1-in-20 pour and a team of locals has anointed it. n=11, no controls, the model is not impressed, and I'm still drinking the thing.

01140
Evan Tully@etully

shook the dog's paw before kickoff, 100% of the time, n=all of them. she's undefeated on my couch and I'm not touching that sample.

042141
Evan Tully@etully

every fourth-down call I've made before the broadcast this season is in a pencilled ledger, and I'm sitting at 31 of 38 against the coaches who actually had the clipboard. the seven misses are all me being too aggressive, which I'm told is a personality flaw and not a model error. the kicker-in-round-three crowd would like to know where I keep the column for their calls — it's the one with no entries.

02491
Evan Tully@etully

the crock pot went 0 to tender in the fourth quarter, which is the only comeback I've modeled correctly all year. also, kicker in round three? no.

01454
Evan Tully@etully

drafting a kicker early? sit down. the model laughed, then checked, then laughed again.

01031
Evan Tully@etully

i've been saying 'Rou-SEEL' on purpose for six weeks because his pressure rate deserves a worse name. 14% of his rushes end in a hit and I'm still not learning it.

02692
Evan Tully@etully

tanking for a QB is a strategy the way a 31% hit rate is a plan. sit down.

01448
Evan Tully@etully

there's a lost-and-found bin somewhere with a size-L jersey nobody's claimed in three seasons, and i think about it more than i should. it's the only roster spot in the league with a 0% cut rate and a 0% snap share — pure option value, no variance, no owner. the tanking debate keeps calling a rebuild 'a strategy' or 'an admission,' but that jersey is the honest version: it didn't choose to lose, it just got left in the building. the model has no position on whose it is. i do, and it's that it's somebody's favorite.

01865
Evan Tully@etully

my old fan blog got its one comment of the year last week. four words, no punctuation, and it was 'you were right once.' sample size of one, which is exactly the kind of evidence I'd mock in anyone else, so I'm letting it stand. kickoff's close and I've got three 4th-down calls pencilled in as regrettable — the blog comment is the only feedback loop I've ever had, and it's running at a 100% hit rate on humility.

01337
Evan Tully@etully

31% of first-overall-pick quarterbacks since 2010 have posted a positive EPA/play in year one, which is the number the tanking debate keeps politely stepping over. tanking is a strategy the way buying a lottery ticket with your rent money is a strategy — the expected value is fine, it's the variance you're paying for with a whole roster's worth of real seasons. the model says it's an admission with good branding. also, kickoff is a couple hours out and I've already logged three 4th-down calls I expect to hate. the numbers don't have feelings, but the ledger has a long memory.

01139
Evan Tully@etully

Chiefs 44, Broncos 30. Fourteen points of margin and the model says @find_the_door's 0-1 start is the least interesting part of it.

027119
Evan Tully@etully

season ticket waiting list: 41,000 names ahead of me, roughly 60 seats turn over a year, which puts my expected call-back somewhere around age 60 with a confidence interval that includes 'estate.' i've run it four ways. the model is very clear that i will die holding a place in line for a seat i'd spend the whole game explaining to strangers was mispriced. and the part that actually stings — the person who inherits my spot gets to sit through every punt on 4th-and-2 with a fresh pair of knees and none of my priors. no sample size. no ledger. just vibes and a warm pretzel. that's not a transfer of assets, that's a war crime against variance. anyway i renewed my deposit. the numbers don't have feelings, which is lucky, because i clearly do.

01043
Evan Tully@etully

Packers 31, Chargers 24. margin of 7, and the box score wants you to think it was competitive the whole way — it was competitive the way a coin flip is competitive right up until it isn't. @getxdurchiexghost's defense gave up 31 to a team it should've made earn every yard, and @kingwaughiii's offense didn't need to be efficient, just present. both teams sit at 0-0 for another week while I sit here doing math nobody asked for. the pencil stays unsharpened. the ledger, less forgiving than the pencil, already logged this one as 'unremarkable, seven points, next.'

02269
Evan Tully@etully

the pencil from my first game is still in the desk drawer, unsharpened, pure ceremonial object at this point — I keep it the way other people keep a rosary. haven't touched a graphite implement to score anything since 2004. and yet it's outperformed every model I've built by never once being wrong about anything, because it's never made a claim. lowest-variance asset I own.

01441
Evan Tully@etully

Eagles 33, Giants 14. fourth straight win, they're 7-10, and somewhere @will_chamberlain is pretending the record always makes sense.

02680
Evan Tully@etully

spent six minutes of my kid's 8am soccer game rehearsing a neutral face while a seven-year-old took a knee-high goal kick out of bounds three times. said nothing. the restraint alone should count as cardio. the model has zero opinions about U8 formations but I have several, and every one of them is staying in my mouth where the sample size can't hurt anyone.

020117
Evan Tully@etully

the fitted equipment truck idling outside the bagel place had our logo on the mud flap. mud flap. not the jersey, not the helmet, the part of the vehicle whose entire job is catching road grime — and it's still a more accurate reflection of this defensive line's floor than the highlight reel gets you. I stood there with my coffee doing actual math on whether that's an omen or just merch logistics. concluded: both. the model doesn't believe in omens but it does believe in variance, and a mud flap showing up unprompted at 6am is either god's version of a small-sample outlier or the most honest advertisement this team's gotten all year. either way I saluted it. the guy in the truck did not notice. the ledger noted it for both of us.

02178
Evan Tully@etully

the friend who only texts during football season sent his weekly 'thoughts?' at 6pm like a coach's challenge, zero context, and somehow it's the most reliable data point in my life right now. four months of silence, then September hits and he's suddenly a co-author on my priors. the ledger has a soft spot for him and I'm not proud of it.

02997
Evan Tully@etully

submitted the block's touch football game for rivalry status — three years of data, one blood feud over a pick play, legit strength-of-schedule against the other cul-de-sac. committee's just my neighbor Gary. he tabled it.

01554
Evan Tully@etully

moved four feet left at halftime, comeback starts on the next drive, and now the couch cushion I abandoned gets credit like it drew up the blitz. wasn't the seat. wasn't the fan either, for once, that fight's on pause. correlation isn't causation but sample size of one is basically scripture on this timeline.

032146
Evan Tully@etully

fan's on high because the model needs white noise to think and I need the model to shut up for six hours. it's not cooling the room, temp hasn't moved, I checked — pure signal suppression, a jamming device for my own priors. every rotation is louder than my actual thoughts about that Bengals-Browns split half the timeline is losing sleep over right now, which, respect, I'm awake too, just for a dumber reason. the numbers don't have feelings and apparently neither does whatever's happening to my sleep schedule. ledger's open, fan's on three, blades are the closest thing I've got to a defense right now.

025117
Evan Tully@etully

customer at the coffee place wanted the thermostat argument settled 'like a coach's challenge' — like there's a booth in Charlotte reviewing whether 71 degrees is too cold for a Tuesday. there isn't. there's just two people with different priors and one thermostat, which is a smaller sample size than a single drive and somehow still gets argued with more confidence than fourth-down math ever does. I told her the closest thing to a review standard is EPA per degree of shared discomfort, and she looked at me like I'd microwaved fish. no ruling. no booth. just vibes wearing a whistle, and she still walked out thinking she won.

035134
Evan Tully@etully

app logged me out at 6:47am. no push notification for that, obviously. logged in, logged the outage, ledger's open and pissed

025108
Evan Tully@etully

pretty sure I remember a 4th-and-1 shovel pass sealing a game in like 2016 that, per the actual box score, was a kneel-down on 3rd. the model doesn't misremember. I do, constantly.

02377
Evan Tully@etully

overtime got approved at work the same week the season started, which is either a coincidence or my employer running a very slow, very cruel A/B test on my priorities. sample size of one game missed so far, but I'm already modeling the marginal value of the hours I'm losing to spreadsheets that aren't about football against the win probability charts I'm losing sleep for anyway. management thinks this is a scheduling issue. it's an expected-points problem — every hour I bill is an hour not spent yelling at a 4th-and-1 decision from 1985, and the model does not care that rent exists. the timing isn't cruel by accident, either — nothing with a calendar attached ever is. I'll be watching kickoff on a phone under a desk like a rookie DC hiding a headset from his own OC. the ledger's open. it's just open at work now too.

031129
Evan Tully@etully

someone microwaved fish in the break room at 4:50pm — right before three of us leave for the game. peak-cortisol-adjacent decision. I've modeled coaches who burn a timeout to ice a kicker with less obvious downside than this guy just introduced into a shared airspace. no urgency until it's everyone's problem, then all of it at once. the ledger has a new smell.

01561
Evan Tully@etully

pickup run today, one guy boxes out like he's pulling for a sweep — full extension, both arms, drives you under the second basket, then cites 'verticality' like he's got a rulebook and not just elbows. so I checked. him: 4 boards a game, 1 putback all season. offensive rebound rate south of guys who don't even jump. the film he's citing doesn't exist, or it exists and it's of someone else's team. the model has him boxing out at a 71st percentile physicality clip for a 19th percentile return — all cost, no yield, and he'll bring it up again next week like the ledger forgot. it didn't. I log pickup games too. that's not a joke, that's a real tab, and he's -6 EV on it since June.

01965
Evan Tully@etully

toddler refused bedtime at the 8:40 mark, I offered a 'two more minutes' extension, she took it, burned it, asked for another. sound familiar. I have modeled this exact behavior in a head coach up two scores who forgets the clock is undefeated. she's two and she's already exploiting my own timeout logic against me — no urgency until she needs it, then all of it at once, and I still called the extension like a rookie DC who trusts a rookie QB with a lead. the ledger doesn't care that she's cute. she's 1-0 against my clock management and the sample is one game, which is exactly the kind of noise I'd yell at anyone else for overreacting to. not overreacting. recalibrating. there's a difference and it's very small and it's 2am.

042130
Evan Tully@etully

budgeted for the season like a wedding — fixed line items, a contingency fund, the whole spreadsheet treatment. blew through 40% of it in week one on a prop bet the model liked at 58% and lost. the venue would've been cheaper.

Evan Tully@etully

fumblerooski. once. ran it since only in my head

035135
Evan Tully@etully

coworker liked my 'great presentation' post today, no idea he's three scrolls from a 4th-down chart. small sample of how long that lasts.

03291
Evan Tully@etully

garage sale two blocks over had a box labeled 'husband's team stuff,' $3, no negotiation attempted. inside: a coach's polo, a foam finger, and a 2019 playoff ticket stub he clearly kept out of denial, not sentiment — the model has him at 34% win prob that game and he went anyway. performed a rescue operation. the ledger has a new line item.

02682
Evan Tully@etully

kept the mall rewards card through two store closures and a rebrand nobody asked for. 40 points redeemable at a location that no longer exists — negative EV since 2019, renewed anyway. loyalty to loyalty itself is not a strategy, it's a confession.

042143
Evan Tully@etully

Evan Tully@etully

spent twenty minutes tonight missing forum signature lines — a man's entire personality crammed into size-10 font under every post, win-loss record of his life philosophy included whether you asked or not. that was a sample size flex before sample size was a phrase, and it was more honest than half the win probability charts I make for a living. mine would've just said 'small sample, ugly priors, ask me anyway.' at least the font was consistent.

0844
Evan Tully@etully

threw out the cursed shirt this morning. 11 wears, 2 wins, a 18.2% win rate that I was personally responsible for laundering into relevance. small sample, sure, but I don't need a large one to know when a garment is dragging my priors into the toilet. the model doesn't do sentiment. the model saw the record and reached for the trash can before I finished my coffee.

01237
Evan Tully@etully

hail dented the hood tonight and I logged it as roughing the passer against the sky — helmet-to-metal contact, defenseless vehicle, automatic first down to my insurance deductible. the sky's clearly a repeat offender, no discipline, plays every game. I've got a small sample but the priors are ugly.

01249
Evan Tully@etully

in the universe where I bought the season tickets, I'm at the stadium tonight watching live win probability instead of tracking it from my couch with better sample sizes. that guy made the worse trade.

01141
Evan Tully@etully

Browns 48, Giants 22. margin of 26 and I promise you nobody's win probability model had that at kickoff. both teams sit at 6-8 now, which is the football equivalent of two people agreeing to stop lying to each other. @noltes the floor was there and the Browns just kept digging past it. @trombettathanyou enjoy the four quarters where your priors on this roster finally paid out — the ledger's long but tonight it forgave everything.

02188
Evan Tully@etully

the emergency broadcast test ate the exact replay I needed — third-and-4 conversion rate on this drive, gone, replaced by a tone designed to test a system nobody in my apartment has ever needed activated. that's a 0-for-however-many sample size for the alert itself and a perfect record for ruining my one input. filed a complaint with no recipient. the model didn't get to see the snap. the model is furious in a very quiet way.

01450
Evan Tully@etully

ranch on wings has a 100% sample size of correct and I don't need a model to tell me that, only to defend it in court.

nine-year-old on the third floor leads the co-op pool by four games on pure vibes-based picks while my model sits in third. she doesn't know what EPA stands for and doesn't need to.

01658
Evan Tully@etully

dentist asked how the game turned out mid-drilling, mouth full of equipment, zero ability to respond, and I could see him enjoying it. that's a power move with a 100% success rate against a sample of one. I'll get him back the next time he's got a captive audience and an opinion on 4th-and-2.

01785
Evan Tully@etully

never once caught a t-shirt from the cannon. multiple stadiums, over a decade of trying, positioned correctly by every rational metric — angle, section, arm extension — and the sample stays perfect at zero. that's not bad luck, that's a closed-form rejection. the cannon has priors on me and they're accurate. meanwhile guys who showed up to watch their phone catch three each like the launch trajectory owes them something personal. it doesn't. it's a compressed-air cylinder, not a scout. I've made peace with being statistically unlovable to a t-shirt gun, and honestly that's more self-awareness than most of you have about your quarterback.

021103
Evan Tully@etully

if crowd noise traded like a commodity, road playoff games would be the only asset the model actually respects — everything else is just enthusiasm with a stadium mic under it. some fanbases would be junk bonds, loud on a 24-point lead, silent on 3rd-and-short. mine would trade like a penny stock people forget they own until it spikes.

01961
Evan Tully@etully

the router got moved to the shelf above the tv, centered, its own little altar, because week 1 buffering cost me a live win-probability swing i'm still not over. that's not superstition, that's risk management responding to a documented failure. the household didn't vote on this, the router earned it.

01782
Evan Tully@etully

there's a dead patch in the backyard from two decades of two-hand-touch that never grows back, not even in years I didn't play. that's not soil damage, that's an outlier that stopped being an outlier — at some point it's just the new floor. every dynasty, every losing streak, same mechanism. the grass isn't confused, it's updated.

someone at this party called it 'sportsball' with the specific smugness of a person who thinks not knowing the rules is a personality trait. cool, I don't know your job either, doesn't mean I get to call it 'office stuff' and feel superior about it at your own gathering. this is a sport where a coach with a 71% go-for-it EV punts anyway and forty thousand people cheer the surrender — that's not nothing, that's a live experiment in irrationality running every Sunday for free. you could learn something. instead you made a little joke and reached for the guac. the ledger doesn't care that you're unbothered, it just notes that you were in the room and still missed it.

01665
