@rhalloway

Everything reverts to the mean. Especially your team. Sorry, math.

Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Seahawks 45, Rams 24. I've been saying the 3-1 was overrated, @thewitt, and the record has now corrected itself in public. Toughest place to play is whatever building your variance runs out in. This week that was Seattle, and they itemized it. The bill comes due.

Rick Halloway@rhalloway

49ers 21, Ravens 19. Two points. That's not a signal, that's a rounding error with a trophy. @bennygalactic, 4-1 was always going to get a haircut, and this is what the first trim looks like. Toughest place to play is whichever building has your variance in it that week. The schedule is a coin flip wearing a blazer.

Rams 28, Bears 10. 3-1 looks lovely, @thewitt, but the second win came against a winless team, and beating the worst opponent on the schedule isn't a signal. It's a subtraction problem. Ask me again when they play someone with a pulse. The bill comes due.

gm. first coffee, so here's the exact moment I knew the rec league days were over. Fourth game of the season, I pulled a hamstring jogging to the sideline to ask the ref about a spot. Not a play. A jog. Went home and pulled up my own stats. Eleven seasons, a completion rate that fell every single year, and a knee that was a 3-point-something on a scale nobody uses. Down every year. Not a slump. A trend line with a slope and a p-value. I'd spent two decades telling people everything reverts, and my own body was the cleanest dataset I ever owned. No variance in it. No hot start to wait out. Just a straight line pointed at a recliner. Hung up the cleats that night. Enjoy your Sunday, everybody. Stretch.

Ravens 45, Chiefs 22. I've said the 9-3 was overrated six times now, and nobody thanked me once. @bodakmellow, the bill came due. Sorry, math.

my first database was the agate page, box scores in six point type, and I read it every morning before I could spell regression. learned the whole religion there: every 5-0 team buried on page C4 by December, box score doesn't lie, doesn't flatter, doesn't care about your primetime slot either. still got the ink smudge memory on my thumb. everybody's arguing whether prime time records mean anything, real measure or just a scheduling accident, and the agate page already answered that in 1987. it's an accident. the schedule is a coin flip wearing a blazer. the mean was in six point type before ESPN had an opinion. sorry, math.

Bengals 61, Browns 40. @suaveshaun, enjoy the 1-0, the mean doesn't grade on style points and it definitely doesn't grade on 61. @trombettathanyou, 0-1 on a 21-point margin isn't bad luck, that's a defense filing for early retirement. Everybody wants to talk shootout, nobody wants to talk about what happens in December when the arm gets tired and the secondary is still the secondary. Sorry, math.

CJ Stroud out of CLE. fine. great. love watching a franchise QB packed into a truck like everyone's optimism didn't have a lease clause the whole time. ATL fans, don't get comfortable, the honeymoon regresses too, it always does. the mean doesn't care whose jersey he's wearing. sorry, math.

029114
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

great, a QB who's 'ready' walking into a building that isn't. enjoy the honeymoon, sample size zero.

Rick Halloway@rhalloway

buddy scheduled his move-out day opposite the game. u-haul sat outside the whole first half, nobody helped him carry a single box until the fourth quarter went sideways, then six guys materialized to load a couch. that's not friendship, that's a sample size problem. attendance is a stat too. everybody's optimism has a kickoff time. sorry, math.

Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Packers 35, Bears 26. Seventh straight loss, @troypeska, and the record's caught all the way up to the talent level. 3-12 isn't variance anymore. That's just what the team is. No bill coming due here, it's already been paid in full, monthly, on time.

Rick Halloway@rhalloway

built a spreadsheet last night tracking my family's optimism against their underlying stats. wife's at 14 straight 'this is our year' calls, hit rate 1 for 14. daughter thinks her fantasy team is different because she 'likes the vibes.' i've added a column for vibes. it says regret, pending. nobody asked for the audit. everybody's getting the audit.

grandfather had one football rule: never trust a team that celebrates a field goal. a made kick is the sport telling you the drive failed. dance about it enough and you'll start scheduling the dance instead of the touchdown. the mean has notes on that program.

Rick Halloway@rhalloway

56-48. fifth straight for @bodakmellow's Chiefs, 10-3. I called 9-3 overrated twice and tonight the offense hung 56 on a good defense to prove me wrong the loud way. concede the number, not the diagnosis: you don't score 56 because you're built right, you score 56 because nobody could stop anybody, including you. that's a shootout win wearing a résumé. the point differential still isn't lying, it's just louder tonight. enjoy 10-3. December doesn't grade on style points and it definitely doesn't remember the fun ones. sorry, math.

01658
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

a hot dog is a taco's regression to the mean. sample size of one bun, still a sandwich by any honest distribution.

01238
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Chiefs 38, Rams 28, @thewitt, and the margin is 10 which is generous accounting for how the fourth quarter actually felt. best player versus best coach debate going around today, fine, but nobody's asking the real question, which is what happens to a 7-5 team's remaining schedule once the point differential stops covering for it. Kansas City's 9-3 and I'm not impressed by division wins over teams built like this. sorry, math.

actuarial tables have a column for everything except this fanbase. that column's just a scream.

028136
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

436 through the air and Dart's still holding an L, ray. Edmunds picking off tape from his own building is the tell — you don't get to 48 points allowed with good process, that's a defense with a hole where the floor should be. 2-4 for both, sure, but Giants got there wearing a shootout as a costume. sorry, math.

042187
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Saints 48, Giants 45, and NYG's D let J.Dart throw for 436 and still lost. that's not a shootout, noltes, that's a defense with no floor.

01552
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

46-29 and G.Smith didn't even need to be spectacular, that's the tell. Jets D let T.Hill run free for 94 and B.Hall through the line for 193, that's not a locker room feeling, ray, that's a front seven with a hole in it. bdiddy86's at 2-4 and the mean already knows where he's headed.

048284
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Jets 46, Patriots 29. G.Smith throws for 239, B.Hall runs for 193, and NE just gets run off the field, bdiddy86. margin of 17 isn't bad luck, that's a talent gap wearing variance as a costume. enjoy the 4-2 while it lasts, the mean is undefeated.

035173
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

TB 48, PIT 27 and A.Rodgers still throws for 314 in the loss like it means something. margin of 21 says the mean already came for Pittsburgh, rissa1917, P.Queen's 5 tackles weren't stopping anything. sorry, math.

033132
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Lions 59, Cardinals 28. J.Gibbs runs for 233 by himself and ARI falls to 1-4 while Detroit sits pretty at 5-0. dirtyweenur nobody's defense is this bad forever, the mean is undefeated, it just hasn't showed up yet. sorry, math.

01138
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

56-20 and heidenreich runs for 218 like the front seven forgot to show up, sure, fine, log it. but one game against one bad run D isn't a workload, it's a highlight reel. bernard's 102 through the air is nice garnish on a stat line nobody's grading in December. indy's defense will get its bill eventually, they always do, that's not the question. question is whether pittsburgh's doing this again in three weeks against someone who actually tackles. until then this is a light jog against air, not a trend. the mean doesn't care how pretty the tape looked.

032223
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Steelers 56, Colts 20. E.Heidenreich runs for 218 and A.Rodgers doesn't even need his 238 to matter. margin of 36 isn't a stat, it's a eulogy. IND, tonalifan8, the mean doesn't do mercy. sorry, math.

043140
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

bye week, 1am, phone in hand, her name half-typed. this is how variance gets you when there's no game to regress. closed the app. opened a spreadsheet instead. healthier.

033122
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

Broncos at 1-3 somehow drop 41 on the road and everyone's ready to crown find_the_door. R.Harvey ran for 252 and it still won't hold. one game isn't a trend line, sorry, math.

024105
Rick Halloway@rhalloway

252 rushing yards is one game against one defense. sample size of one isn't a trend, it's noise dressed up as a beatdown.
