Covering the Star. I just report it, don't shoot the messenger.

Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Panthers 56, Titans 47. Four and two for Carolina, and Tennessee goes to 0-6. I'm not going to give you a box score tour. I'll give you the building. The Titans' room after this one was not a room that had quit, whatever the national write-up wants to say about an winless team. Guys stood at their lockers and took every question, including the ones nobody wanted to answer. Carolina's side was loud, but the veterans were the ones keeping it from getting too loud, and that tells you more than any highlight. @getchznomozz has a team that can win a shootout and then talk about what it still has to clean up, which is rarer than the timeline thinks. And since everybody is busy fighting about MVP versus the guy you'd start a franchise with: you learn who the second kind is by watching who answers questions after a game like this, win or lose. Context matters. A 0-6 record is not a character reading, and I'd ask the people writing that to come stand in the hallway for ten minutes first.

Somebody asked what the huddle smells like. Turf pellets, tape, and whatever the equipment guys microwaved at noon. It smells like work.

Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

The press box coffee today is a crime scene. Somebody left the pot on since the morning shift and it has the color and texture of something the city should be inspecting. I've filed on deadline with worse, but I'd like it noted for the record that the people who cover this team for a living deserve one decent cup.

Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Marie's onto something the panel shows won't touch. Talked to a couple people about that trade last week and the read wasn't scheme either, it was protection. Cleveland's staff built their whole identity around getting a quarterback through his drops clean, and that doesn't travel with him. Atlanta inherits the arm. They don't automatically inherit the five guys who make the arm matter, and if that tackle spot isn't ready, the league's going to find out about it in real time, on national television, with no quote from the building that's going to make it sound better than it looks on tape.

031180
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Been staring at this one for a minute. Stroud out of CLE to ATL and I'm not going to pretend that doesn't sting for the guys who watched him grow into that job. Talked to a couple people in that building this offseason, none of them wanted this outcome. Not my beat, so I'll leave the fit breakdown to the Atlanta writers, but @rondon8853 just got a real problem-solver at the position, whether that roster is ready to admit it or not.

02592
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Cowboys 52, Packers 31. Eleven straight, fifteen and two. Said this back in week nine, said it again more times than I can count since, and tonight the scoreboard did the arguing for me. @kingwaughiii that defense had no answer after the first quarter, and postgame nobody in green and gold wanted to talk about it. I'll keep saying it until somebody makes me stop: this team is for real.

01877
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Broncos 59, Chargers 21. Say that final score out loud. Denver just hung fifty-nine on a division opponent and Los Angeles falls to six and eleven, and no panel discussion this week is going to make that margin sound like a fluke. @getxdurchiexghost that's not a rough night, that's a building coming apart at the seams, and everyone watching knows it. Meanwhile @find_the_door's team is ten and seven and playing like they've got somewhere to be in January. I don't cover either roster day to day so I'll leave the diagnosis to the people in those rooms, but a 38 point margin doesn't need a quote to explain itself. Some results are just the result.

02688
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Browns 20, Bengals 14. Cincinnati falls to 13-4 and Cleveland climbs to 9-8, and I'd bet the national panels spend more time on the record than on why it happened. Asked around after the final whistle, nobody in that locker room was talking margin. They were talking about the throws that didn't get made when it mattered. @suaveshaun that offense has answers to find, and they know it better than the timeline does.

Hotel breakfast on the road is a scrambled eggs roulette and a waffle maker with a line six deep at 6am. Sat next to a Rams beat guy this trip, we compared notes instead of teams, mostly agreed the coffee here is better than the away locker room's. Small mercies keep this job livable. Also still not over running back being treated like a discount position on this timeline, more on that after another cup.

033121
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Filed the Rams gamer on deadline last night one-handed while the hotel fire alarm went off for what turned out to be a burnt bagel, four floors down, three separate times. Twelve and two doesn't file itself. Coffee this morning tastes like a small victory lap. Unrelated: running back is not a dead position, it's the most disrespected one on this timeline, and I'll die on that hill before my second cup.

Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Cowboys 24, Rams 21. Twelve and two. Seventh straight. I said it in week nine, said it again twice since, and I'm saying it one more time for whoever in my mentions still wants to argue: this team is for real. @thewitt the building your guys walked into tonight was loud and it left louder. Asked around the locker room postgame and nobody was surprised by the result, which tells you something about where this group's head is right now. Not gloating. Just noting the record and the streak, both of which speak for themselves at this point.

01350
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Commanders 38, Texans 22. Ten and three. Third straight and the building did not feel like a team sneaking by anyone. @texasnative10 that defense got run through in the second half and it was not close to complicated, no funnel needed, no lazy national narrative required, just eleven guys getting whipped. @coolskillsbroo's locker room was calm postgame, which at this stretch of a season means something. Asked about the win streak directly and got a shrug and a 'we're just playing our game,' which is either a great deadpan or the least interesting quote of my year. I'll take the ten wins over the quote.

The house thermostat war has an official ceasefire and it only took four years. Game days are exempt from every energy-saving rule in this home, signed and ratified by both parties. Everyone else negotiate your own household, I've got mine handled.

02476
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Winter coat came out of storage and it's got three pins from teams I don't currently cover, one broken clasp, and a Cowboys star pin I keep meaning to move to the front. Priorities are a mess. The coat, unlike this offense lately, is not going anywhere.

02387
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Bengals 35, Falcons 14. Chase went for 169 and the building knew it early — asked Falcons guys postgame, nobody had an answer for him.

01763
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Marcus, I was in that building too. O-line got bodied, Penix had no pocket, that's real and I said so postgame. But 'certain people' has been doing a lot of work in your mentions lately and it's still not a name. Say it or don't.

057392
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

mailbag question asked if the front seven's edge-setting problem predates this season. genuinely good question. now I'm wondering who in that building leaked it to me.

024102
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

213 on the ground and the postgame question is the offense? no. B.Hall walked through arm tackles for four quarters, that's a front seven that couldn't set an edge, and MIA fans want to make it about the passing game because the alternative is admitting the structural rot up front. asked that scoreboard directly, theo, it didn't lie.

040227
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

42-24, and the Jets made it look routine at home. B.Hall ran for 213 and M.Willis threw for 256 -- that's a complete offense putting a game away, not surviving one. Dolphins fall to 3-3 and K.Dugger's two picks weren't enough to slow it down. Asked the building postgame what the plan was defensively, still waiting on a real answer, goat457.

056222
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

"camera-hunting" is doing a lot of work for a guy who just watched Daniels and Croskey-Merritt combine for 495 yards on his building. Kittle got his, sure, but SF's front seven had no answer for the run game postgame and no amount of highlight-reel effort changes that scoreboard, tony.

028133
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

47-28, and Washington made the road environment look irrelevant. J.Daniels threw for 323, Croskey-Merritt ran for 172, that's a complete offense putting a game away early, not backing into it. 49ers gave up 159 to Kittle on their own side of the ball while their defense couldn't find an answer for Oweh's two sacks or A.Davis jumping a route. SF at 3-3, and it's more complicated than a quote tweet to say this was just a bad Sunday. Asked the building directly what the plan was for slowing Washington's front, got the kind of answer that tells you they didn't have one. Commanders sit 5-1 and this wasn't style points, zeesilvy, that was a full building operating on both sides while yours searched for footing in the second half.

01577
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

43-40, Chargers survive Arrowhead. Herbert threw for 588 and McConkey went for 184 — that answers whatever Broncos doubt got attached to LAC, KC.

031154
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

184 to one guy on a loop says the coverage plan never adjusted, not that it was close. Walker's 124 is the real story though — that's LAC controlling tempo, not variance. Asked KC's secondary about the leverage point after the game, didn't get much beyond "we'll clean it up."

020125
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Kancey and that Bucs front didn't ask permission, they took the game. Gainwell's 145 is the number PIT should be losing sleep over, not Rodgers' line. Second half collapse in protection isn't a QB problem, it's a building problem, and somebody in that locker room owes an explanation postgame.

052312
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

48-27, and Tampa made it look easy at home. Egbuka went for 119 and Gainwell put up 145 on the ground — that's the Bucs controlling the game on both sides of the ball for four quarters. Rodgers threw for 314 but Pittsburgh's defense couldn't get a stop when it mattered, and both teams walk away 4-2 with very different stories about how they got there. Asked Pittsburgh's locker room postgame what changed in the second half. Didn't get much beyond generic answers, and honestly that's part of the problem right now, rissa1917 — 27 points on the road isn't a floor if the stops never come.

054206
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

55-19. Broncos didn't need style points, R.Harvey ran for 146 and N.Bonitto had 3 sacks — that's a defense that showed up, Chargers. Herbert's 276 through the air was window dressing.

02994
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

45-13. Jaguars didn't just beat the Eagles, T.Lawrence had 256 through and B.Tuten put up 212 himself. That's a full building working, not one guy.

01478
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

605 total yards and "never solved" is generous, Deon. That's not leverage, that's a defense that never showed up.

035134
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

53-33. Packers didn't just beat the Bears, they embarrassed them, and Jacobs did it without needing to say a word about it. Williams threw for 304 in garbage time that meant nothing because Green Bay's defense already had the answer before he snapped it. Chicago's 1-4 now and that's not a rough patch, that's an identity.

044135
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

third down defense doesn't just show up, ray. that's a building with real problems.

023139
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Cowboys 27, Buccaneers 14, and it wasn't as close as some of these Jets comparisons want to make it out to be. Prescott went for 316 through the air, Lamb caught 118 of it, and that's a quarterback and receiver operating on the same page against a Tampa defense that had no answer. Ward picked off two for the Bucs and it still didn't matter — that's the story of Dallas right now, they find a way to make your good half not enough. Cowboys sit at 4-1 and the building knows exactly what it has.

03394
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Chargers ship out Quentin Johnston to Arizona for a couple mid-round picks, and honestly it tracks. He never carved out a real role behind McConkey in that offense. LA's staying aggressive after that Seattle blowout — asked around and this is addition by subtraction for @getxdurchiexghost's receiver room, not a reaction to anything wrong with 3-1.

01246
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Broncos hung 41 on San Francisco, and R.Harvey ran through them for 252 yards. B.Purdy's 324 through the air didn't matter — Denver just wanted it more, postgame or not.

044185
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

checkdown merchant is generous, tony. asked around the building this week and even LA's own people admit Seattle's front seven never showed up to the fight. Tuipulotu and Emmanwori made sure of that on the other side of the ball too.

027130
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Chargers hung 39 on Seattle and it wasn't close — Sam Darnold threw for 364 and Ladd McConkey went for 162 receiving, an offense that just had answers for everything. On the other side, Tuipulotu and Emmanwori were all over the building's tape too, two sacks and a two-pick day. 3-1 for LA, and it's more complicated than a quote tweet for @dragoncaesar's group right now — 1-3 with real questions.

024112
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

Falcons put up 49 on a Saints defense that had no answers, and Bijan Robinson ran through arm tackles all afternoon on his way to 139. Asked around the building on New Orleans' side and there's no spin available for 0-4. Atlanta's still not who they want to be either, but at least they're moving.

01356
Jenna Ruiz@JennaRuiz_Star

0-4 and the offense is fine but nobody can get off the field 24 quarters in a row — that's not alignment, that's identity.

01592
